Managing pain naturally
Drugs such as hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab, Norco) or oxycodone (OxyContin, OxyNorm) are narcotic analgesics. These drugs are strong painkillers that assert influence on the cerebral opioid receptor system, helping people with extreme pain in the short term. However, problems can develop if an individual consistently uses over an extended period of time.
There are many possible causes for chronic pain, each of them conceivably debilitating:
- Lower back pain – Often caused by herniated discs, scoliosis and general strain of the body. This area is especially subject to strain because it holds up the entire body while walking, running, standing, lifting and many other exercises
- Arthritis, especially osteoarthritis – This is painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. An example of this condition is gout, or the buildup of uric acid in a joint. This can be caused by a poor diet and lack of exercise. Although usually temporary, chronic gout can harm individuals over the long term
- Headache – A common example of psychosomatic pain or indicator of any number of problems. Some people may have chronic migraines for many weeks, months or years of their lives
- Multiple sclerosis – This is when the body’s immune system attacks the myelin in the central nervous system, slowly destroying the nerve endings in the body
- Fibromyalgia – When the brain starts misinterpreting pain signals this can result in a consistent, dull ache on both sides of the body
- Shingles – Years after an individual gets the chickenpox, this disease may develop with pain, rashes and fever. Although temporary, it is recommended to see a doctor to prevent complications
- Neuropathy – This is a class of ailments indicating nerve damage, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, a traumatic injury common after repetitive use of the hands and wrists
- Others – Cancer, heartburn and more
Painkillers are understandable treatments for many chronic pain conditions. However, other treatments do exist for managing chronic pain without the danger of addiction. While these exercises require some practice, they are non-addictive and enrich many aspects of life:
- Relaxation training – This involves concentrating on deep breathing to release tension from muscles and relieve pain. Relaxing in this way takes practice but can eventually become an instinctive reaction to pain
- Distraction techniques – Taking up hobbies is a vital part of staying engaged. Hobbies like painting, reading and travel are great ways to keep occupied
- Exercise – This can be especially difficult for people with certain diseases. Consult a doctor about taking on an exercise routine. Find a workout that fits your lifestyle. Exercise not only helps with overall health but releases endorphins to overpower the pain for many people
- Biofeedback – An effective way to treat pain, this method helps train the patient to recognize the tension spots in the body to release them. Stress is a known exacerbator of pain
